I’ve Been On More Than 50 Cruises. Here Are 9 Things You Shouldn’t Waste Your Money On

Cruises are full of ups and downs, with some experiences leaving you feeling like a million bucks, while others make you wish you’d spent your money elsewhere.

After more than fifty cruises, I’ve learned the hard way about what’s actually worth your hard-earned cash and what is just a money pit in disguise.

So, I’m here to help you, and trust me your wallet will thank you later!

1. Specialty Dining

Specialty dining might sound exquisite, but the regular dining options on cruises are already top-notch. I’ve found myself in a cozy corner of the main dining room, savoring dishes that rival any fine restaurant.

The variety is impressive, and the atmosphere often just as delightful. Why shell out extra for something that’s already included in your fare?

Specialty dining often means a pricier menu and a need for reservations. Enjoying the buffet or main dining room gives you the flexibility to eat whenever you want, without the fuss.

2. Beverage Packages

Beverage packages can be tempting, especially when you imagine sipping cocktails by the pool. But unless you’re planning to drink like a fish, they might not be worth it.

I’ve done the math on a few trips, and many times, it’s cheaper to pay as you go. Why pay for unlimited drinks when a glass of wine at dinner or a refreshing cocktail now and then will do?

On one cruise, I discovered mocktails that were just as enjoyable, minus the hefty price tag. The secret thrill of finding a happy hour deal can make the experience even more enjoyable. Remember, every drink adds up, but so does every saved dollar.

3. Wi-Fi Packages

Wi-Fi packages on cruises often promise seamless connectivity, yet reality sometimes falls short. I’ve spent more time watching the spinning wheel than enjoying a smooth browsing experience.

Many fellow cruisers nod in agreement, having faced similar frustrations. Why stress over web speed when you’re surrounded by ocean views and endless entertainment? Unplugging can be a welcome break!

Use the time to unwind, maybe dive into a good book, or explore the ship’s many amenities. Moreover, some ports offer free Wi-Fi in cafes or lounges, so you can catch up online without the onboard expense.

4. Excursion Bookings

Booking excursions through the cruise line is convenient, but it often comes with a hefty markup. In my travels, I’ve found that exploring independently can lead to wonderful, unexpected adventures.

Imagine wandering through a local market, chatting with vendors, and tasting exotic treats. Often, local guides offer tours at a fraction of the price, and you might even make some new friends along the way.

It’s all about the experience, and sometimes going solo adds a touch of spontaneity to your trip. So, why pay extra for what you can discover on your own? Embrace the spontaneity and keep your budget in check.

5. Spa Treatments

All right, spa treatments on a cruise are undeniably luxurious. But they are often too expensive. The onboard spa may promise ultimate relaxation, but sometimes a simple soak in the ship’s hot tub does the trick.

Massages and facials can be delightful treats, yet the cost can add up quickly. On one cruise, I discovered the ship’s sauna and steam rooms were complimentary. It’s amazing how a little pampering can be achieved without breaking the bank.

Exploring the ship’s free wellness options can lead to unexpected relaxation and joy. Invest in experiences rather than pricey treatments! It makes your vacation both memorable and affordable.

6. Souvenir Photos

They are everywhere on cruises, capturing moments you might prefer to forget. While it’s fun to dress up and pose for the onboard photographers, the price tag can be less enjoyable.

There’s nothing funnier than flipping through the photo gallery, chuckling at your own goofy expressions. Instead of splurging on professional shots, try snapping your own pictures. A candid shot on your smartphone can capture genuine moments of joy.

Plus, it’s a great way to relive the memories, without the hefty expense. Sharing laughter over those imperfect selfies often beats the polished images you might purchase.

7. Cabin Upgrades

Cabin upgrades are often touted as essential, but I’ve found that a simple stateroom can be just as delightful. It’s the experience that counts, not the square footage.

The time spent in the cabin is usually minimal, with so much to explore on board and ashore. Many fellow cruisers agree that a basic room suffices if it’s just a place to sleep.

Sometimes, the charm of a compact space is in its coziness and efficiency. By saving on upgrades, you have more to spend on something truly unforgettable. Embrace the essentials and let the journey itself be your luxury.

8. Fitness Classes

Fitness classes on cruises can be invigorating, but they’re often pricey. The ship’s gym is usually included in your fare and it offers plenty of equipment and space to keep active.

Engaging in a self-guided workout can be just as fulfilling, with the added bonus of setting your own pace. A jog around the deck at sunrise can invigorate the spirit without costing a dime.

Many cruises even offer free group activities, perfect for meeting new people while staying fit. Why spend on classes when the ocean breeze can be your coach? Let the open sea inspire your fitness journey, without the extra fees.

9. Onboard Shopping

Yes, onboard shopping offers flashy temptations, but the allure of tax-free deals can be deceptive. I’ve wandered through glittering boutiques, only to realize the prices aren’t always bargains.

Often, items can be found cheaper on land. Cruise shopping tends to focus on luxury goods, where discounts might not be as significant as they seem. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but restraint can lead to better finds in local markets at ports.

Skip the onboard splurges and spend wisely, knowing that every purchase should add value to your journey.
